Press and hold f8 on start. Or, in Vista search msconfig and run it. Select the boot tab, then safe boot, minimal. On restart you will be in safe mode.

To put your computer in safe mode, turn off your computer by pressing (and holding) the power button. Then, turn on your computer and you should be able to choose to run windows in safe mode, as well as many other modes. It is not recomended that you put windows in safe mode if you have no problems with windows.

either your computer has some kind of error, perhaps caused by a hard drive failure, or, more likely, you have a virus. try reinstalling your operating system and seeing if that helps

If your computer doesnot go into safe mode, then there will be few reasons like a viral attack or some working "dll" files or some important system files of your computer might be damaged. Sometimes even powerful antivirus cannot discover the entry of a virus or a trojan. In this case you may be encountering this problem.

Get to safe mode during start-up. Otherwise, you have lost a piece of the operating system. See if you can reload it.
