The nickname has nothing to do with the local fauna. It originates from 1909, when a faculty member stated the football team "fought like wildcats" in a victory over Illinois.

They are called the Wildcats after a football game played in 1909 versus Illinois. A person commented that the Kentucky football team played like wildcats. The nickname stuck.
