The parts could be overworked or the filter could be damaged but it definitely needs to be replaced because it is not working properly. Parts of the filter could be burned.

Well basically this is a result of overworked parts. There could be something wrong with the converter. There could be damage to the filter or the parts may simply be over burned. Usually, the part is over burned and needs replacement if you are getting that rotten egg smell. It has happened to me before.

A rotten egg smell is usually synonomous with build up of sulfur within the catalytic converter. You need to get it replaced as this not only affects emissions for your vehicle, but also performance.

It is time to replace your catalytic converter. You need to take it to a shop and have them weld a new one on.

You are driving along when all of a sudden you start to gag from something that smells like rotten eggs. You wonder what can it be? The cause of the smell is from bad gasoline. Try to recall where you last bought gas and remember never to return to that gas station.

This smell of sulfur means the converter is not functioning properly. The vehicle should be serviced: the converter may need replacing. Its purpose is to make exhaust less toxic through chemical conversion of hydrocarbons. When it is not working properly, sulfur may build up and combine with oxygen forming sulfuric acid, the major contributor to acid rain.

You get a rotten egg smell when your catalytic converter is going out. You will need to get it replaced pretty soon. Unless you know how to weld it is not a do it yourself task, have a mechanic that knows what they are doing do it. Depending upon where your located you can find catalytic converters for pretty cheap.
