The leader of the second expedition to circle the globe was Garcia Jofre de Loaysa, a Spaniard who set sail July 24, 1525. This expedition isn't well known because it wasn't very succesful. 450 men originally sailed from Spain and only nine returned in 1536 on a Portugese ship. None of the original ships returned from the voyage.

Sir Francis Drake is generally given credit as the second, as he sailed from Plymouth, England in 1577 and returned to the same place in 1580. Some might say the eight surviving men out of 450 led by Garcia Jofre de Loaysa, but none of thier ships survived the trip.

In the year of 1528, the second officially recognized successful circumnavigation of the globe was achieved by the Spaniard, Andres de Urdaneta, who was also interestingly enough, an Augustinian friar. In fact, the course he took to cross the Pacific ocean became later known as "Urdaneta's Route". However, his return was met with little fanfare from the king of Spain.
