It is hard to say who the inventor of the first fountain pen was. Fountain pens have been mentioned throughout history since the 10th century but without any specific names of the constructors. The first name mentioned is that of the French royal instrument maker Nicolas Bion (1652-1733). However, he never made any claims himself to be the inventor.

Some sources have cited Lewis Edson Waterman as the pens inventor. However, other sources disagree. Stating that the true originator of the fountain pen is lost to history! Since the earliest known surviving pens are from the 18th century, Mister Waterman could certainly not have been responsible for their invention.

The modern fountain pen was created by Lewis Waterman in the 19th Century, however there are earlier examples in Europe and references to fountain pens dating back almost 1000 years.
