Poseidon is the Greek god of the sea and earthquakes. He is also the brother of Zeus and the counterpart of the Roman god of the sea Neptune.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon is a titan--a powerful god--who rules over the ocean. Poseidon and Zeus are both sons of Chronos, or Saturn in Roman mythology.

Poseidon to the Greeks and Neptune to the Romans, he was the ancient god of the sea and of earthquakes. Brother and sometime competitor with Zeus, leader of the Greek gods, Poseidon held great power and an unpredictable nature. Sailors undertaking journeys would sacrifice to him before, during and after sea voyages to ensure good sailing and a safe return.

Poseidon was the ancient Greek god of the sea, among other things. Thus, it is not illogical to have a ship (or a movie about a ship) named after him.
