Thomas Bowdler is credited with the expurgated Shakespeare of 1818, among other "expurgated" versions and several books on Europe. While his name was linked to censorship, his work let a Victorian audience shocked by the original versions study Shakespeare. Earlier expurgated versions dating from 1807 are credited to him, but now thought to have been partly edited by his sister.
