The ancient Egyptians were known to have used a form of paper made from papyrus reeds as early as 3500BC. The type of paper used today was invented by TS'ai Lun of China in 705 AD. The use of this type of paper spread to Arab counties by the 8th century and to Europe by the late 14th century.

Paper is believed to have been invented by Cai Lun of China in second century AD. 100-105 AD to be specific.

The ancient Chinese invented paper, and they did it long before Gutenberg became famous for developing the first printing press in Europe.
