In my opinion, Robert Johnson is the king of blues music. Beyond Robert, I'd say the best were/are Howlin' Wolf, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and Reverend Gary Davis.

Blues singers are often unknown while living, and often come alive once they are dead. I think the very best have not yet been found as they most likely live in New Orleans, while they sing the blues of the aftermass of Hurricane Katrina. I think we will learn of them in a few decades, once they die.
