Call Angies list and see if they can recommend a carpenter. He should be licensed and bonded and have some credentials. Cheaper is not always better. Find out what he has done before and contact the people and see if their satisfied. Make sure you can communicate with him with your plans.

Call multiple contractors and arrange meeting times form them to come talk to you about what you want to do. Give them a reasonable date (a few weeks or so) to get the bid to you. You should get the bid in writing and ask for a total of materials and labor.
