the st.louis arch, known as the Gateway arch was finished in 1965 after being designed in the 1940s it was built to put St. Louis on the map, the same as many public works in cities are

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was designed by Eero Saarinen in 1947, and build between 1963 and 1965. It is part of the Jefferson National Expansion memorial, located near the start of Lewis and Clark's expedition, and commemorating the Louisiana Purchase and the westward migration of the pioneers.
