Reconstruction began in 1865 and was abandoned with the Compromise of 1877 and the south entered into the Jim Crow era, which later gave way to the Civil Rights Era.

From 1865-1877 the Southern Confederacy was controlled by the government. The south was required to modify their political and social structure before they were allowed to rejoin the Union.

Reconstruction began in 1865 with the close of the American Civil War and ended in 1877 with the election of Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency. As part of a plan to break an electoral vote logjam, Hayes got the support of southern democrats by promising to end reconstruction.
