Determine what type of hydranea you have and if it blooms on old or new wood. If it blooms on old wood, then prune in the early fall so new growth has a chance to develop before winter. If it blooms on new wood then prune in the early fall for early blooms next year or spring for later blooms.

When you prune it will encourage growth and your plant will not grow straggly. The plant will have a nice shape.

Pruning of hydrangeas should be done in the spring and the fall. Pruning the bush down some will help produce a bushier plant during the next growing season and allow for more blooms.
