If a different style would work better for you would be one reason. Another reason might be that the one you're using is malfunctioning or is just worn out.

It depends where you live. In California we fish all winter. I would search the internet and search for the type you want and look for a good sale.

A good indicator is if starts to get "gummy," but this could also be fixed with reel oil most likely. The reel should be relatively easy to take apart, and the whole thing including the handle could be oiled without harm. Some reel's advise oiling once a year, even.

If you find yourself getting your rod snatched violently out of your hand by guppies, shiners or overweight minnows, you may need to look into replacing it.

Around February or March is a great time to pick up a hand reel replacement. Most department stores that have fishing departments are just receiving their stock for the fishing season so the likely hood of finding what you need is high. Although you run the risk of paying full price as the sales don't start till later.

If the handle is getting old we can identify it by its performance. if it gives lot of problems during the time of fishing we can buy new one
