Answer by  sususu (866)

When the king is in immediate danger of being captured, the player trying to capture the king says check. This gives the player whose king is in danger an opportunity to get out of check and in a safer scenario. If there's no way to get out of check, a player would say checkmate.

Say "check" when you are in a position to take the opponent's King on the next move. To get out of check, your opponent must move the King, or take the piece that threatens the King, or place one of his or her pieces in your path. If that can't be done, the result is checkmate, and you win.
