NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was set up in 1957 by Congress and President Eisenhower. It was set up in direct response to the Soviet's launching of Sputnik and replaced the previous National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. This executive branch agency was launched as a civilian (non-military) program for space exploration.

The last week of July, 1958 is when NASA was established. Otherwise, NASA has led U.S. nasaspace exploration ever since, resulting in the Apollo missions to the Moon.
