When can you put the guinea pig dad back in after birth?

Answer by  Mumma (483)

Preferably never, unless you have him neutered. Mum goes into heat only a few hours after delivering pups and back breeding is EXTREMELY dangerous - even more dangerous than a normal pregnancy, which carries a 20% risk of death anyway. Separate any male pups at 3 weeks (21 days) and please adopt rather than breeding in the future.

Unless you want more breeding to happen, keep the male and female seperated for good. A female guinea pig can become pregnant almost immediately after giving birth. After a few weeks of birth, you may add the male babies to the fathers cage.

Don't put dad back in unless you have him neutered. Mum can become pregnant immediately after. Back breeding is VERY dangerous to the mum, and every single pregnancy carries a 20% risk of death (even after successful ones). If you love your pets, then please adopt rather than breeding, as breeding only contributes to death and overpopulation of cavies.
