An open whole flute has an open area which is covered by your finger as you press keys. The closed whole has solid keys.

A closed hole flute, sometimes referred to as a "student mode" has solid keys which when depressed create a tight seal. The keys of an open hole or "French Style" flute are open rings which can be played in such a way to create special effects or covered completely with the fingers to creat clear tones.

On an open-hole flute, some of the keypads have a hole in them, whereas on a closed-hole flute, none of the keypads do. An open-flute is harder to play, as the flautist must then plug the holes with his/her fingers, but it produces better sound than a closed-hole flute, and is seen as a professional flute.

Closed-hole are just that. Open-hole keys rely on your finger action and make playing a lot better due to reaction time of the air escaping from the flute.

The difference is in regards to finger placement. On closed hole, if the fingers are on the correct keys, it will play. On open hole, they must cover the holes.
