You can write a memory you two shared, or a little joke or story. Or maybe a simple wish saying, "Happy birthday to a good friend, may you have many more! " I like to write, "Happy birthday! Have fun today because you'll never bee this young again, but be careful because you've never been so old! "

Wish them a Happy Birthday, and to have whatever age they are more. If they are 20, then you say "Happy Birthday and I hope you have 20 more! " Is a good line. Also put a joke that only you and your friend would understand, for a little personal effect.

Obviously the firs thing you would want to include is Happy Birthday. I believe in being sincere and expressing your appreciation for them, you can still use humor.
