While these gray scaly patches could be a sign of skin disease, skin with this appearance is most commonly categorized as pressure sores. Pressure sores are caused by your dog lying on hard surfaces and usually occur at the elbows and other points where pressure is most intensely applied when your dog lies/sits down.

It could be something as simple as allergies. My mother in law has a boxer and he developed similar patches on his sides. The vet said they were due to allergies and put him on medication and now he is doing fine. He also developed patches around both of his kneecaps.

The patches could be a result of mange, which is mites that canines get. Your vet can test the area to confirm and then treat it with a cream.
