What would cause an automobile to accelerate on its own?

My car is accelerating on its on.

This is most likely a problem with the cruise control. The CC holds a memory of the last speed selected and will return to that speed if the resume button is pressed. Otherwise check the throttle linkage

Throttle linkage sticking or interference with the pedal. Be sure the floor mat is not causing the pedal to stick. Check there is nothing causing the linkage on the fuel injection or carb. to bind. With engine off have someone pump the gas while you watch the linkage for binding.

I would check the gas pedal. It may be sticking. I've had my gas pedal stick in very cold weather, and also when the mat gets lodged underneath it.
