Question by  penrose (235)

What will happen if most newspapers close down because they are not viable businesses?

Will we only be able to get news from citizen journalism or just small, independent news outlets?

Those who have access to the internet will not be affected by it. I have not read a newspaper in years. There is plenty where to get your news from, newspaper are mostly editorials anyway. The problem is for the people who may not have access to the internet.

TV, radio and the Internet are all good sources of news. Newspapers have become anachronistic because they have allowed politics and personal agendas to color reporting, thus affecting advertising revenues. Other media affords faster access and more frequent updates, which hastens the obsolescence of newspapers.

I think your worry is very legitimate. It is possible and maybe even likely for many newspapers to fail. I don't think that all will fail though. As newspapers disappear, the readers will move to the larger ones, and a few will still thrive with the extra subscribers.

I agree with this, but I think that the newspaper as a medium might even cease to exist for even the largest papers. The extra costs are unnecessary. They will move to web-only, or ePaper solutions (like the amazon kindle)  add a comment

Without newspapers, which provide almost all the local news eventually copied by TV and radio and then commented on by "citizen journalists," there will be no usefual alternative. Corruption will run unchecked in most cities. Police will be able to violate civil rights at will.
