The Victorian era was named after Queen Victoria of England. The years of her reign were often associated with lavish wealth and extreme poverty. It was also a time of sexual repression. Because of industrialization and expansion it was also a time of worker dissatisfaction. Outbreaks of disease were common.

This depended a great deal on which end of the social scale you were at. If you were wealthy life was very comfortable. On the other hand if you were poor life was full of poverty, hard work and disease. Of course diseases like cholera and influenza had no respect of social standing.

For the upper class, it was largely like a Jane Austen novel. For the working class it was more like a Charles Dickens novel.
