For most of the century, the U.S. was governed by the British. Taxes, the inability to engage in free trade and the law requiring colonists to quarter soldiers are a few reasons for the independence movement of the 1770's. In 1781, the colonies adopted the Articles of Confederation, but the nation was not solidified until the Constitution in 1789.

Up until the end of the French and Indian war in 1763, the American colonies governed themselves and considered themselves loyal British citizens. However, when King George III started levying various taxes to pay the war debt, colonists started to rebel against the crown. In 1776, independence was declared.
