British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan when the British rule ended. In princely states the prince could choose India or Pakistan. The state of Kashmir was ruled by a Hindu prince, but the population was 77% Muslim. Pakistan attempted to force the prince to their side; in reaction, he acceded to India. Pakistan has never accepted this decision.

Kashmir was ruled by Hindu princes over majority-Muslim population. When India and Pakistan split, all border areas were given a choice of whether to join mostly-Hindu India or all-Muslim Pakistan. Kashmir's princes chose to join India, while most of the population wanted to go to Pakistan. Since the province contains major passes into the Himalayas, India fights to keep it.
