The election brought Abraham Lincoln to the presidency. With a Republican, who wanted to stop the spread of slavery, as president the South seceded rather than lose their own slaves.

This event was essentially the last possibility to prevent the American Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was running on a political platform for the new Republican party that included stopping slavery. The South threatened to secede from the Union if he won the election. His victory led directly to the South opening fire on Fort Sumter and thus started the war.

The imporance of the electuon of 1860 was to let the new states automatically not have slaves or to the them to choose. Licoln supported the idea of them not being slave states. He won the election and the south split apart from the north but lincoln brought it together.
