A temperature of 99 and 100.5 degrees is calculated as low-grade, but anything higher than that is considered a fever. That means your body is producing heat to fight off an infection caused by a virus or bacteria. The fever prompts your body to produce more white blood cells to combat the illness.

It depends on your usual temperature. A low-grade fever may start about 1 degree over your normal temperature. A "high" fever usually starts around 101 or 102.

Any average body temperature above 98.6 can be considered a fever, but normally serious fevers are above 100 degrees and probably need some sort of medical attention
