There is a whining sound at first. Then there is a grinding sound. Lastly, there is a crashing sound. Then you totally know that the bearing went off because you will be in a hospital.

It will be a loud grinding noise that gets worse the faster you go. This is quite dangerous, do not drive very fast on it.

When a bearing goes out on a car, a general knocking is heard. It is not a full knock, it is a light, repetitious knocking like rocks flying up and hitting the underside of the car.

Typically there in not a lot of sound when a wheel bearing goes out. Sometimes there is a great deal of vibration. Typically the best way to tell short of pulling the wheel is to jack it up and see it the wheel will shimmy side to side or up and down. If it does you need a new bearing.
