One thing to consider is the ring size. Not just the size but the half size too, as many people's fingers are different. Also you'll want to consider what kinds of rings come in your price range, and whether or not you want to use the traditional diamond as the stone or a different stone that might be cheaper.

First you should determine what cut diamond you prefer. (princess, solitare, emerald etc). Next determine your price range. If you wish to purchase the diamond separately from the setting you must consider color and clarity, the more perfect the diamond the more expensive it will be.

You should should definitely find something you like and something you can afford. Something timeless that isn't too dated or trendy.

You would consider carrot, cut, and color of the diamond and the setting. You can have a big stone or many stones, or possibly consider a different stone.

First and foremost stick to your budget no matter what the jewelry clerk says. Choose a ring that suits the person's stature. Smaller size stones for a petite person and such. Stones should be clear with no visible flaws under a 10x loupe.
