You can do it, but it's not recommended. You would need to lightly sand them. Then put on a primer coat. Then paint them. It doesn't last long, so you'd need to repeat this process every six months or so. It's usually better to start from scratch and put in new counter tops.

Because kitchen counters take so much abuse it's a very difficult do it yourself project. There are professionals who come to your home and apply a spray coating that forms a very hard, durable surface. We did this and have been pleased with the outcome.

It is actually easier to remove and replace the counter tops than it is to refinish them unless you have a small section to refinish. I say this because usually the colors don't match and you can tell the old and the new.

You will need to remove sink, watch when removing it, sink can broke very easy. If you will have problems, better contact your local home improvement store.

You should know whether you want to remove your old Formica or if you want to put something new directly on top of it.
