The fireplace itself will take quite a bit of work to refinish. This will require re-working all of the mortar joints as well as replacing bricks. I would suggest installing a stainless flu liner versus re finishing. The cost will be comparable and the liner will out last the morter.

The refinishing of a fireplace it is exactly the same as for a stone, concrete or brick wall just that you must let the cement rendering dry completely before applying the painting(else when you start the fire, the fire place will hearten and make like a sweating on the painting).

To refinsh your fireplace you should understand that stain comes in a can and can be brushed on with a paint brush or sponge.
