What should I know about parakeets before getting one as a pet?

Parakeets require a lot of social interaction, either with you or another bird. They also can be quite noisy and have the habit of tossing their seeds everywhere,so if you're a neat freak, that could be a problem. Periodically they will molt or shed some feathers and they can look disheveled for a while.

Parakeets (also known as budgerigars) are social animals and need attention or should be kept in groups. Females have a beige cere while males have blue ceres.

Parakeets need at least a 28 inch cage because they are active birds. They also need toys and a varied diet. They do better with a buddy rather then alone.

Keep away from windows and drafts and no higher than 6 ft. off the floor. Buy fresh seed and add vitamins and grit. Supply plenty of toys for stimulation.

Definitely buy her from a private breeder. The ones at pet stores can be old and not used to humans. Not all private breeders are expensive, a lot of them do it as a hobby and just like birds. Look for a local listing.
