For best results, sand with 100 grit sandpaper. Prime with an oil-based primer and re-sand. Use latex-based paint and apply a base coat. Sand again, and apply a second coat of latex paint. You can repeat this process as needed, using higher grade sand paper if desired. When you're done, spray on any protective clear coating.

When painting particle board be aware that it might take a couple of coats of paint. The board tends to absorb the paint. I found that poster paint or a latex paint will do the trick. Let it dry and then coat it again until you have desired affect.

Paint with the lightest coat possible to keep it from swelling. Reapply as necessary to get the coverage you want, but allow to dry thoroughly between coats.

Prime, prime, prime. You must use a good primer before you can paint particle board with your paint color of choice.

Well to paint the particle board, you need to make sure you use about two coats of paint. When you paint a particle board it gets all bubbly. So use two coats.

The most important thing to remember is to rough up the surface with some fine sandpaper prior to applying each coat of paint or primer to ensure it coats well.

Particle board or other composite-glued woods, because of their porousness, require (2) coats of a good primer or a good polymer (polyurethane) sealant. Otherwise, much of your paint soaks up into the material, resulting in an uneven finish, which can get dirty and is more difficult to clean or re-paint. Use an appropriate-paint for whatever your-particle-board will be used for.

I would prime it real good with primer so it will seal good for a lovely coat of paint also sand and paint with paint about 3 coats so it will cover.
