What should I know about painting a subfloor?

Well make sure you choose the right paint or coating that will go. You want to get all other things out of the area so that they do not get stained.

First, you will have to use an oil based or heavy duty type of paint and those will need to be done in a well ventilated area. Once you have painted, you will also want to seal it.

The first step is to ensure that the area is entirely clean and free of dirt and debris. Next you need to make sure that you are using a paint or stain that is specifically designed for flooring and high traffic. Otherwise, you will notice the paint does not wear very well.

Subfloors are not typically painted and may not hold up very well. It may be best to cover the subfloor in a more durable surface before you paint.

Fill all cracks, crevices and openings with wood putty. Remove the dust with a tack cloth or a damp rag. Paint with a high quality primer. Apply final paint color. Allow to dry thoroughly. Finish with a protective surface such as polyurethane. This provides a durable finish to your subfloor.
