The most important thing to learn is water chemistry. Learn how to use test kits/strips and when to add chemicals. Good chemistry keeps the water clean and reduces maintenance across the board. Knowing when and how to vacuum is also important, but good chemistry will reduce that chore as well.

Well you have to filter out the water and make sure that mold is not growing into the pool. You have to make sure that you are cleaning with chlorine often.

Use chlorine to keep your pool sanitized, it helps from bacteria. The levels for this are at two to three ppm. Check calcium hardness often as it affects water balance.

Buy a test kit. Follow easy instruction. I would recomend using bromine as a sanitizer rather than chlorine. It's safer and easier on your equipment. Check chemicals often and add chemicals as needed to keep a good balance. It's actually fun once you get the hang of it.

To maintain a pool instal water treatment and chemical treatment plant. Use chlorine product for sanitizing the pool. Put algae inhibitors so that algae do not form in the pool.

The biggest thing to know is that there is no such thing as a perfect pool water. As long as it is still looking good and not slimy on the bottom there is no need to run a sample of water to the pool store every time you turn around. This will cost you much.
