If it is natural, you will want to go with a good quality product, like Clairol or Lorel. If it is dyed, make an appointment with a salon. They have more experience with highlighting colored hair, and are less likely to burn it out. Above all, remember that coloration of highlights is different on black hair then lighter colors.

When highlighting black hair it is better to go with the tones that are naturally present in your hair. If your hair is jet black, blue toned highlights look stunning, if it is a warm black, mahogany or even burgundy tones look best.

If you're highlighting black hair, don't use blonde because it will be too drastic. You might need to bleach your strands first though so that they hold the color of your highlights. Sometimes if you don't go light enough the color won't take- so you want to go light, but not too light.

It is very tricky to strip the pigment out of dark hair without having the hair turn brassy or orange. You should go to hairdresser to have it done right.

If the black is permanent hair color then you should know that the highlights might not get light enough for desired look. If natural black hair then you will be fine. Just make sure you or whoever does it is detail oriented. Spotting can occur without even saturation.

First off be aware your hair wont turn the "pretty blond" you're thinking of. Lifting black hair takes a lot of applications of dye, to get out the brassiness.

What you should know about highlighting your hair, if its black its going to take longer to do it because your hair is so dark. Do it more then once.

If you're highlighting black hair make sure you don't choose a highlight shade that is too light or it could end up turning a weird color.
