Dental implants must have enough bone to support them. Bone augmentation is a term that is to"build" bone so that dental implants can be placed. It involve grafting (adding) bone or bonelike materials to the jaw, and waiting for the grafted material to fuse with the existing bone over several months.

There is going to be a lot of swelling. It is a painful procedure and infection is possible. Bone grafts may also fail.
