You should know that you need to speak with your dentist or the specialist to get all the facts. Like what kind of anesthesia will he be using and its side effects. You also need to know the success rate of a root canal, and what happens if it fails.

If the tooth in question is a baby tooth, your dentist will be doing a pulpotomy - not a root canal. It involves removing the tissue in the pulp chamber and mummifying the remaining tissue in the root canals with formocreasol or ferric sulphate. It has about a 70% success rate depending on the state of the tooth.

If your child needs a root canal you have nothing to worry about. Definately get the tooth fixed because if you don't it could get worse and end up with an abcess or having to be pulled. If you do not take care of the baby teeth their is a huge chance that your adult teeth will have problems.

A pediatric root canal is also called a pulpectomy. If a child is losing baby teeth, it may be better to pull the tooth and let the next one come in naturally. However, for back molars that will be in for years or new teeth, a root canal is best.

I hope this is an adult tooth at is getting the root canal. One can not be done on a baby tooth. Otherwise it is no big deal for the tooth or the child. It does take a long time to do it.I would ask dentist about option of gas.

A root canal is only done if you want to save the tooth. This is done in conjunction with a crown or cap. If it is a permanent (adult) tooth, you want to save it. If it is a baby tooth that will fall out soon, just have it pulled and let the incoming tooth replace it.
