In the wild they eat fish insects and fruit so that is all ok, but most people give them reptile food from the store, or crickets and minnows

Natural substances such as bits of vegetable matter are the most readily available and least expensive solution, although manufactured food can also be purchased for this animal at various pet stores.

In the wild, painted turtles are omnivorous ? they may eat fish, insects, plants, fruit, carrion, and anything else they find. You can also try feeding them crickets, minnows, red worms, mealworms, and Reptomin (commercial reptile food). Whole fresh smelt (when you can manage get it) is their all-time favorite.
