While grains grit and mash are good for use as chicken feed, making sure the chickens have fresh water is important. Make sure your chickens are living in sanitary conditions.

You should feed your chickens chicken food if you want to get any eggs from them. The best eggs come from the best chicken. So you should not be asking what is the best thing to feed your chickens but how you can figure out which chicken is the best.

The key to quality eggs is a balanced feed with the right amount of around 18% of crude protein, amino acids, phosphorus, calcium (for harder shells) and grit. Purchase a well-known quality feed product designed for laying hens and you should have no problems. With any feed you should see results after 4 weeks of use.

Try to give them a varied diet. Commercial feed is fine as a basis but chickens are designed to scratch about for insects, grass, plants and other scraps. Nature really does know best, so vary the diet with whatever is seasonally available in terms of grains and plants and let them have as much free space as you can.

I find it best if you do not give them bagged all in one chicken feeds. Give them a laying mash and let them run around and peck things out of the ground. You should also give them corn in addition.

Keep your chickens well fed, and give them a varied diet that includes grains and lots of grass. You can also cut up vegetables and give them to your chickens. Chickens also need protein. And make sure they always have fresh water available.
