Question by  Peaches (12)

What should I do if my toddler's behavior leads me to believe she is gifted and extremely smart?

My toddler could speak before any of her friends and is trying to read. I think she is gifted.

Encourage her by example. Listen to what she has to say. Look her in the eyes when she's talking to you. Show her respect (no less than you expect from her), be compassionate, supportive, and treat her as an adult-in-training, not just a kid.

Help her absorb information by reading books and offering activities that are stimulating. Do not push learning or education as it may create a distate for it. I have a nephew who was put into private school for gifted children only to drop out in high school.

The most important thing for toddlers remains the same whether gifted or not: unconditional love and firm limits. Beyond that, make sure your toddler is in a safe but stimulating environment to explore AT HER OWN PACE. Don't push... if she is truly gifted, she won't need it! Lastly, enroll her in a quality preschool program!

Talk to your pediatrician and get recommendations - she may be ready to start early preschool. Make sure you're encouraging her intellectual development by reading and other creative endeavors.

1. Have more complex toys available, including puzzles and books. 2. Read to your child. 3. Have drawing and writing activities around and show her how to do them, then let her explore.
