You should begin by being friendly, not talking too much. Allow him time to get used to you. Don't overwhelm him. Talk about simple things, that you think will make him feel comfortable. When he talks, don't examine him closely.

You may need to be careful about making assumptions about the reasons for his conduct. If he is truly scared and detached, the prospects for your romantic relationship may not be good. It's probably best for both of you if you offer your friendship and support and evaluate if you should continue dating.

Perhaps you should ask the question, why am I dating a person who has these difficulties. Being in a relationship with someone with these issues would be like pushing water up hill all of the time. Go and seek someone who is healthy emotionally and you can just enjoy dating.

I would talk to him about his fears, and find out what the real issue is, and where it stems from. If you aren't successful, I would try and encourage him to go to counselling and address these concerns with a professional, and obviously, offer to go with him and support him.
