If he is inactive due to a layoff, look into getting him into a social networking group that offers emotional support, male bonding, and job hunting assistance. If he is depressed, also consider finding emotional support and counseling. Don't just gripe and criticize what he is not doing, but praise what he does do.

What's in it for him if he does something (because people will do things that have a clear benefit for themselves)? Is he reacting to being micromanaged when he has done things in the past? If you want him to do something, he gets to do it his way. When he does the least little thing, thank him.

An author wrote a book about how marine mammal trainers use positive reinforcement. She tried it on her family and it worked. Praise him when he actually does something.

Tell your husband that a man's home is his castle and he should join you in taking pride in it. If he is unemployed, give him so many chores to do at home that working anywhere else would be preferable. Stop waiting on him and doing things for him.
