Before getting a hamster, you should consider that you will need a cage, or aquarium to put the hamster in. The hamster also needs food, a water bottle, some toys (such as a wheel) and wood chips or sawdust to cover the bottom of the cage. You will need to take care of the hamster, cleaning its cage out regularly.

Hamsters are not cuddly animals - oftentimes they do not like to be handled. On the otherhand, they do not require a tremendous amount of work. You will need to keep the cage clean (maybe once a week) so the hamster doesn't start to smell.

Do you have the time and money to properly care for a hamster? Is there anything in your home that could harm the hamster?

Consider who is going to be playing with the hamster the most. If it's a young child, it might be better not to cause they are easy to accidently hurt.

The first thing to consider is can you handle the short life span of a hamster? They only live a couple of years and usually die from some ailment that they contract. Also do you have time for them? They are very sociable and like attention. The last item is cost. Can you afford the supplies you need?
