What should happen if the umpire is hit by a batted ball?

The umpire is part of the baseball field. If the ball strikes the umpire in fair territory the ball remains fair same as if the umpire is hit by the ball while he is foul territory the ball is considered foul.

It if is the homeplate umpire, the ball is foul. If the umpire is at any other base, and the ball did not pass any fielder, the ball is considered "dead" and not playable. If the ball passed a fielder, it is considered alive, and playable.

The umpire is in essence part of the field. Players should play as if the ball simply took a bad hop. The ball remains live. The only exception would be if a batted ball strikes a umpire in foul territory, at that point the ball is considered foul.

An umpire is considered part of the field of play. As such, the play continues with nothing different happening. If there is a question of whether the ball is fair or foul, this is also determined normally.
