The only sensible solution is to replace the thermostat because the faulty thermostat may use a special metal strip that cannot be rplaced.

You need to replace the thermostat. It is likely broken and is not operating correctly. I'd suggest a thermostat that has cycles to lower your energy costs.

You should fix or replace it. Depending on the type of thermostat it is most likely not too expensive to replace thus that is likely the better option.

The thermostat would probably have to be replaced. The mercury in the thermostat is not working a new one may be the answer.

On most home heating and air conditioning systems, the thermostat can be replaced pretty easily, without professional help. They're inexpensive. Programmable ones can cost as little as $50.
