The word comes from the Latin for a place to stay. It's modern meaning is simply "a large house," though usually an exceptionally large one.

"Mansion" is a totally subjective term, so nothing really makes a house a mansion other than the consensus of most people that it is a mansion.

Well, there are different definitions of what makes a house a mansion. Some people will say it is based on how big the house is. And some people will say it is based on how much you spent towards buying the house. According to me, any house with atleast 1 acre worth more than 1 million is a mansion.

Some realtors say any house over 6,000 square feet qualifies it as a mansion. But there is no hard and set rule. Sometimes a house can be smaller, but still considered a mansion. You have to consider the location, as well as any special attributes, such as a wine cellar, horse stable, or tennis court, of the house in question.

A lot of older homes of 5,000 sq ft or more are titled as Mansions. I don't think it has to do with the tennis courts or pools. I think it is that "grand" feel when you walk into the home. The high ceilings, large open foyers.

My house is almost 10000 square feet. It is on almost 8 acres. We have a hot tub, pool, summer kitchen, 2 eat in kitchens, an office, a butler's pantry, a steam shower, 3 car garage and an elevator. Is it a mansion?

Well I live in a 5,500 square foot home and to me it feels like a mansion. We have 3 dining rooms, 7 bedrooms, (bathrooms in each one), also 3 other bathrooms, a library, a bar room, and we did just host a wedding of nearly 200 so yeah.
