Dogwood. Small tree, pink or white flowers in the spring and the leaves shrivel in the fall and blow away and red berries for the birds.

If you are in the north 3/4 of the country, consider a crabapple. Get one that is disease resistant, ask your nursery about this. Also consider serviceberry for fall color, redbud for spring flowers, and one of the callery pears for dark green foliage and spring flowers and fall color.

The type of tree I would recommend for a small yard would be a dwarf red maple. It grows quite straight. Lovely colorful leaves, holds up well in winter weather, and does not need a lot of attention. The red maple comes with different types of leaves. Full size and thin fingerlike leaves.

A flowering fruit tree is often an excellent choice, especially the non fruit-producing type. Try a pear tree, or possibly a peach tree. Willow trees can be an excesslent choice as they soak up excess moisture, but be aware that their root systems often grow near the surface...consider that factor when deciding.

There are a wide variety of trees that you could plant in your yard. Just be aware of the size the tree can grow too. Palm trees are nice and there are types which don't grow too big. you could also plant a fruit tree such as a lemon or orange tree. Trim the tree to keep it under control.

Perhaps a fruit tree could be planted as they are slow growing and you will be able to tend to them in the tight space of the yard. Fruit trees add value to the property.

The tree you plant in a small yard should not be one which takes too much of a space. It should not eat into the manure and fertilzer given to the adjacent plants. Some small trees which bear pleseant flowers would be the more suitable ones. Even something like pongamia which remains lush green in summer would be truly refreshing.
