The female Cicada Killer Wasp or Sand Hornet dig there burrows into the ground, as nesting sites. These nests are about six to ten inches deep and a half inch wide.

The cicada killer also known as the ground hornet, bold faced hornet, or the sand hornet are three kinds of ground burrowing insects, but you may not be seeing a hornet at all but maybe a wasp such as the Yellowjacket or Paperwasp which live in the ground, too.

Yellowjackets usually built their nest on the ground. sometimes below the old rodents hole. if you see a mound of soil do not kick it. hornets might attack you.
