There are five classic red Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec. Only these varieties may be used in a red wine labeled Bordeaux. These varieties are blended in different amounts to produce the various red wines of Bordeaux. The white wine grape of the Bordeaux region is Sauvignon Blanc.

Red varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and in rarer occasions Malbec and Petit Verdot. For white varietals Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are the most common, with Muscadelle as a less used varietal.
